Watercolor on Vellum. Djanira da Motta e Silva was a Brazilian painter, illustrator and engraver, known by her first name Djanira. She was known for her naïve art paintings, depicting Brazilian common people, religious themes and landscapes. She was born in 1914 in Rio de Janeiro and died in 1979. She was hospitalized at age 23 with tuberculosis when she drew her first drawing. She held her first solo show in Brazil in 1945. In 1945 she traveled to New York City where she met fellow artist Fernand Leger, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall. Her 1940’s paintings were dark with solemn figures but in the 1950’s she used vibrant colors. This 1947 painting exhibits these bright colors and playfulness and pays homage to her native Brazil with the cross on the mountain and native costume and to New York City with its skyline and NYC fashion. The painting depicts several figures playing music, dancing and having a good time. Signed lower right Djanira N.Y. ’47. Image 18inches x 23 inches. Matted and framed under glass.
