North Africa, Morocco, Devonian period, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. A visually rich group of six trilobite fossils showcases these ancient arthropods preserved within their original stone matrices, representing examples from the orders Ptychopariida and Phacopida. Each specimen offers a distinct impression of form and preservation, unified by their shared origin in the Devonian seas. The trilobites display the classic tripartite body structure, with clearly defined cephalon, articulated thoracic segments, and rounded pygidium. Several examples exhibit pronounced ribbing and well-preserved segmentation, while others appear more softly embedded, reflecting differences in burial conditions and fossilization. The Phacopida specimens are notable for their more robust, convex forms and prominent glabellar regions, while the Ptychopariida examples tend toward flatter profiles and more elongated segmentation. Size of largest matrix: 6.3" L x 4.3" W (16 cm x 10.9 cm); of largest trilobite: 4.1" L x 2.6" W (10.4 cm x 6.6 cm)

Dark mineralization across the fossilized exoskeletons contrasts with the lighter matrices, accentuating anatomical details such as axial ridges and pleural lobes. In certain pieces, the trilobites rise in relief from the surrounding stone, while others remain partially recessed, creating a varied and dynamic presentation across the group. Trilobites of these orders were widespread during the Devonian, a period often called the 'Age of Fishes', when marine ecosystems flourished with increasing complexity. As benthic organisms, they inhabited seafloors, where their durable exoskeletons were readily preserved following burial in sediment. Together, these six specimens offer both scientific and aesthetic appeal, illustrating variation within trilobite morphology and preservation while forming a cohesive and engaging display of Devonian marine life.

  • Condition: Professionally prepared and partially excavated from the surrounding stone matrix. All are repaired and most petite fossil has small area of loss near head. Nice preservation to the eye facets on several.
