SN 017. Cal. 9mm. Very scarce Walther P38 developmental pistol marked as "Mod. MP" with lightened bbl lug, early evolution slide cover/rear sight, internal extractor, square firing pin, round hammer, AP type take-down and slide release levers, and smooth grips. This pistol has a standard 5" bbl with drift adjustable front sight. The left side of the slide is marked by Walther banner followed by 2-line address that references the caliber and "Mod. MP" on the second line. A small oval has been machined out from the lower surface of the tang to better inspect the hammer/hammer strut interaction. The only marking on the frame is the full SN "017" that appears on the right side above the trigger guard and is repeated on the locking block. The bbl is unnumbered. "17" is on the inner surface of the take-down lever. Fitted with a round hammer whose head is hollowed and smooth walnut panels, the left panel having a round recess for the lanyard loop. Neither grip is internally marked. The replacement mag is matched with a "017-33". PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Restoration with approximately 99% of reapplied salt blue. The rear sight and safety lever have both been re-heated to a fire blue, albeit with different hues. VG grips with the left panel having a small perforation with extended cracks near the tang. Small missing splinters of wood on each panel at their juncture of the backstrap. Excellent replacement mag. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. A very rare and interesting developmental pistol whose form and history should be of paramount interest to any collector. 51568-12 LMA C&R
