Desirable World War I Imperial German GEW Type Sniper Rifle with Cassel Scope This is a late WWI GEW rifle that was arsenal converted into a WWI sniper rifle. This is the later pattern sniper rifle that has the double claw front mount with the offset double claw rear mount. The top of the receiver is covered with the scope base and is stamped with the "German Eagle" firing proof on the left side of the receiver ring over the serial number. The receiver side wall is marked "GEW. 98". It has the correct early style milled barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate. Bolt handle is the correct arsenal bent unit with correct proof marks at root of bolt handle. It is fitted with a standard inverted "v" type fixed front sight with the large tangent ski-slope type rear sight. The rifle has a full length walnut stock and handguard with the finger grooves on the sides of the stock, a single stock bolt, and a flat buttplate. The handguard is the correct short pattern. The right side of the stock has two "Crown/Letter" stock proofs below the takedown bolt. Rifle is fitted with a WWI (non-matching) commercial scope (which were government procured for these conversions) that has an all blackish type finish that is marked on top of the scope tube with: "A.G. Hahn Cassel/3x/GEW 533/Mod C/cc". (Rifle is number 561cc, scope is numbered 533cc, very close in number!) It has a single elevation knob on top of the scope with a standard WWI type reticle with the four short aiming posts. Rifle is complete with an original cleaning rod and comes with a reproduction/new manufacture leather sling that incorporates the original sling swivels that came with the rifle. Manufacturer: Mauser Model: GEW 98 BBL: 29 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 561cc Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very good with traces of the blue finish still remaining overall, mostly in the protected areas of the rifle, with the exposed metal a gray patina finish, and the floor plate and trigger guard showing possible arsenal refurbishment. The rear of the exposed barrel and receiver showing some old erosion spots. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with nice color overall, and showing beautiful and unusual prominent "tiger striping". Both the stock and the handguard have been reoiled showing some minor handling marks and light pressure dents overall with visible stock proofs. The scope has 90% of its black finish overall with very clear optics and is fully functional. The rifle itself has all the matching serial numbers, with "561" stamped on all major components and "61" on virtually all other small components. Seller believes rifle was in arsenal "storage" condition. Pictures of the rifle in storage condition will be provided to purchaser on a USB flash drive for their records. One does not find German WWI snipers very often, especially not in this condition!
