Desirable U.S. Contract Colt Third Model Dragoon Revolver Colt 1848 Dragoon Model revolver manufactured for the Army Ordnance Department under the 9th contract for 932 revolvers in Fiscal Year 1859 (July 1, 1858-June 30, 1859). The majority of the 9th contract revolvers were issued as replacement firearms for the 1st and 2nd Dragoon regiments and the Regiment of Mounted Rifles. The revolver has the distinctive combination of rounded trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops that identify it as a Third Model Dragoon revolver. The barrel and cylinder have a military blue finish, the loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap are natural brass. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian scent and "MODEL U.S.MR." in two lines. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped: "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." in three lines. A "T" Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the top and right side of the barrel lug and trigger guard. "L" is stamped on the cylinder and the back strap has a "K" sub-inspection mark. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the script initials of the Ordnance sub-inspector' initials "ADK" in an oval. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the Ordnance final inspector's initials "WAT" in an oval cartouche. The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and side of the cylinder. The partial serial number is stamped on the loading lever, wedge and the underside of the cylinder pin. All of the visible serial numbers match. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Dragoon BBL: 7 1/2 inch Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/case-hardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 18266 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The revolver retains strong traces of the original blue and color casehardened finish in protected areas. Most of the balance of the barrel, loading lever, cylinder, frame and hammer have a smooth, plum brown patina. The professionally renumbered to match cylinder retains most of the Ranger and Indian scene with some fading on the "USMR" markings. All but one of the cylinder safety pins remain intact and the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder have minimal flash pitting. All of the serial numbers, barrel and frame markings are crisp. The bottom of the back strap and adjacent areas of the cylinder have numerous shallow dents. The ordnance inspection marks on the sides of the grip are light but legible. The left forward lower grip exhibits a reglued hairline crack. The action is crisp and functions fine. This is a solid representative example of a desirable U.S. contract Colt Third Model Dragoon revolver.
