Desirable U.S. Colt "Third" Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver This is an example of a highly desirable Colt Third Model Dragoon revolver. There were approximately 10,700 of these revolvers manufactured between 1851 to 1861. The revolver is a late production "4-screw" model that is cut for a shoulder stock with the extended frame screw, notch on the underside edges of the left and right recoil shield and on the underside of the back strap. It has the late square cylinder stops and brass "round back" trigger guard and the barrel has the silver blade front sight with the two position adjustable rear sight mounted on the of the top rear area of the barrel. The top of the barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW-YORK CITY," and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/U.S.". The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with an "L", directly behind the trigger guard is an "S" and there is an "M" on the left trigger guard shoulder. The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, back strap, and the partial serial number "7104 is marked on the loading lever, wedge and cylinder pin. The cylinder is roll-stamped with the Ranger and Indian fight scene and "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT" above and below the serial number. Blade front sight and two folding leaf rear sight mounted on the breech end of the barrel. The recoil shields are cut out for a shoulder stock, and the frame is fitted with the pegs. Fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip. First Model Dragoon revolvers are scarce in any condition. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Dragoon BBL: 7 1/2 inch part octagon Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 17104 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina with scattered even moderate pitting over most of the barrel, frame and cylinder. The brass trigger guard/front strap has an aged patina. The lightly sanded and revarnished grip is good with a few minor dents and dings. The cylinder scene and markings are faint, and the barrel and frame markings are clear. The action is excellent. As a result of hard frontier use, late production "third model" Dragoon revolvers that are cut for a shoulder stock are fairly scarce with most remaining examples show extensive service wear. Correction: This is a Third model Dragoon and not a First model.
