Desirable Factory Engraved Silver Plated Volcanic Repeating Arms Company Lever Action Navy Pistol This is an example of a lever action Navy Pistol that was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. manufactured an estimated 1,500 Navy Pistols with an 8 inch barrel between 1855 and 1857. The receiver is engraved with the classic Volcanic scroll leaf style with shading. The barrel flat is marked with the three line Volcanic Repeating Arms Company address, and the matching serial number is marked on the right side of the lever, right side of the frame under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel. The left side of the lever opposite of the serial number is marked with the letter "Y". This pistol has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, silver plated brass frame and the lever with round finger hole. The barrel/magazine had a blue finish, the hammer and lever were casehardened. The pistol has a German silver cone front sight on the barrel and a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight on the receiver. Fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips. Comes with a research letter from R.L. Wilson which verifies the above information. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Volcanic BBL: 8 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 41 Finish: blue/silver Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1740 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 30% original blue finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. 25% original silver plating remains mixed with a natural aged patina on the exposed brass. Much of the age darkened original case colors remain on the hammer and the lever has a smooth mottled dark patina. The grips are also very good with almost all of the original varnish remaining, and showing some wear on the lower edges and numerous minor dents and dings. The engraving and markings are crisp and clear. The forward portion of the barrel does not lock in place and the action is a bit stiff, however functions well.
