Desirable E Company Marked Colt Walker Model Revolver Colt E Company marked Walker revolver number 67 manufactured c. 1847 is one of an estimated 152 Colt Walker revolvers marked "E Company" at the Whitneyville factory. The E Company marked revolvers were part of a 1000 revolver Ordnance Department contract and were intended for issue to the U.S. Mounted Rifle (USMR) Regiment serving with General Winfield Scott in Mexico. The left side of the frame and bottom of the back strap are roll-stamped: "E COMPANY No 67" in bold letters. "E COM-Y NO 67" is stamped in tiny letters on the bottom of the trigger guard and side of the cylinder. The wedge and front face of the frame are stamped with the serial number "67". The loading lever is numbered "20". The top of the 8-inch part round/part octagon barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY" in one line reading toward the muzzle. The marking "U.S./1847" normally stamped above the wedge slot on the right side of the barrel lug and the E Company marking on the left side of the barrel lug have been neatly milled off the lug. The barrel has been shortened by one inch, and the nickel silver front sight blade re-positioned. The distinctive Walker loading lever and T-shaped latch spring have been replaced by a Dragoon style loading lever and latch. The brass trigger guard has traces of silver-plated finish in protected areas. Consignor notes that accompany the revolver state that it was a factory reject with shortened barrel and replacement loading lever. The revolver retains the distinctive Walker Model features which include: (1) massive, six-shot, 2 7/16-inch cylinder with single safety pin, (2) wide bottom brass trigger guard and (3) frame with oval cut-outs for the grip ends. The revolver has one-piece walnut grips. Author Robert D. Whittington III lists the serial numbers of 19 E Company marked Walker revolvers on page 81 of his 1984 book "THE COLT WHITNEYVILLE-WALKER PISTOL". Number 67 is not included on this list. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Walker BBL: 8 Inch Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: ECOMPANY67 Class: Antique Condition: The revolver modified during period of usage with deep brown patina and scattered light pitting. There are prominent milling marks where the markings were removed from the sides of the barrel lug. The top barrel flat and Colt legend have a number of deep nicks or scratches. The shortened barrel, re-positioned front sight blade, added lever latch and loading lever are well done and could be factory work. The sides of the frame have moderate-heavy pitting, and the frame markings are light. The trigger guard has a dark patina with traces of silver plating in protected areas. The cylinder has the same brown patina as the other components with scattered light pitting. The tiny company markings are clear, but no trace remains of the roll-engraved Ranger and Indian fight scene. The single cylinder safety pin has been flattened. The one-piece walnut grip is in very good condition; wear is limited to some minor handling marks. The action functions well. This is a good looking example of an E Company marked Colt Walker Model revolver with period modifications by the Whitneyville or Colt factory or a talented gunsmith. The Walker Model revolvers are the most prized Colt firearms. This revolver would complement the most advanced Colt collection.
