Desirable Colt Lightning Large Frame Slide Action Express Rifle This is a high condition example of a Colt Lightning Express Rifle that was manufactured in 1888 and chambered for the desirable .45-85-285 cartridge. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine and receiver and casehardened hammer and crescent buttplate. The straight grip stock is smooth, and the forearm is checkered. The round barrel has a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight and is marked with the two-line address/patent marking ahead of the rear sight and marked "45-85-285" on the left side at the breech. The lower right side of the barrel is marked with the London black powder proof which is concealed by the forearm when it is in the ready position. The left side of the receiver is marked with the Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number is stamped on the lower receiver tang. The Lightning Express Rifle was Colt's attempt to compete with the Winchester Model 1876 and Model 1886 heavy caliber rifles. Production of Lightning Express Rifles was limited and surviving examples are scarce. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Lightning-Express BBL: 28 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-85-285 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 1756 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish showing some minor thinning on the balance. 60% case colors remain on the hammer. The wood is fine with a couple cracks near the toe and some minor pressure dents and scratches. There is a deep gouge and some nicks in the forearm checkering. Mechanically excellent. This high conditioned and desirable Colt Lightning Express Rifle would make a great addition to a Colt or antique American longarm collection.
