Cyprus, Cypro-Archaic II period, ca. 600 to 475 BCE; Greece, Attic, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. The larger vessel is a Cypriot askos, formed with a rounded body rising from a low foot and fitted with a high arched handle connecting the shoulder to a small pouring spout. The surface preserves traces of red slip and banded decoration, typical of Cypriot vessels used for pouring liquids such as oil or wine. The smaller is a Greek Attic lekythos, a slender oil flask with a narrow neck, rounded body, and single handle extending from shoulder to rim. The vessel retains areas of dark slip consistent with Attic ceramic production, likely used for storing or pouring perfumed oils, often associated with domestic use or funerary offerings. Size of larger: 5.4" L x 4" W x 5.4" H (13.7 cm x 10.2 cm x 13.7 cm)

Together, the vessels illustrate the shared yet regionally distinct pottery traditions of Cyprus and mainland Greece during antiquity, highlighting common vessel forms used throughout the ancient Mediterranean for storing and dispensing valuable liquids.

  • Condition: Both have a minor chips to rim and expected surface wear with a few nicks and abrasions in areas. Askos has chip to tail. Otherwise, both are intact and very nice with scattered earthen deposits to surface.
