Cricket Interest.- Allen Hill Unique and remarkable collection of cricket memorabilia related to Allen Hill, who played in the first ever Test match in 1877 also taking the first wicket, the lot comprises: a rare 9ct Gold Medal "Presented by George Brown C.E. architect of the M.CC Grand Stand Melbourne" following the first Test match in 1877; an oil on board by John Gibb showing the moment when Allen Hill and the England Test Match Team attempted to traverse a river during their travels from Australia to New Zealand in 1877, label to verso reading 'Mr John Gibb Artist, Mereland Villa Barbados St, Christchurch New Zealand; a silver goblet presented to Allen Hill by an admirer at the Yorkshire /Surrey match at the Oval, August 21st 1871; a cricket ball with silver plaque presented to Hill and commemorating a 1877 match in Canterbury, New Zealand; a silver plaque presented to Hill from 'B Simpson' for attaining the highest score in an all England team against New Zealand at Christchurch in 1877; a silver vesta case bearing Allen Hill's monogramme, hallmarked Sheffield 1900; a gold coloured double-sided locket enclosing a photo of Allen Hill, the obverse, a photo of Peggy McHugh, cousin of James Allen Hill; a pair of cufflinks (8) ***Provenance: Private English Collection; The Estate of Allen Hill Allen Hill (1845-1910) took the first wicket and held the first catch in Test cricket in Melbourne in 1877. A round-arm bowler who could generate serious pace, Hill was a prominent cricketer for Yorkshire in the 1870s before injuries ended his career.
