"Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology (also known as Jungian psychology). Analytic Psychology often referred to as "Jungian analysis" is a term coined by Carl Jung to describe research into his new "empirical science" of the psyche. It was designed to distinguish it from Freud's psychoanalytic theories as their seven-year collaboration on psychoanalysis was drawing to an end between 1912 and 1913, and developing into a psychoanalytic "school" feud that continues to this day. The feud developed because Frued could not tolerate theories that ran counter to his. Jung's radical approach to psychology has been influential in the field of depth psychology and in counter-cultural movements across the globe. Jung is considered as the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth. The leading paper, "On Psychical Energy," is new, first published, in this edition. In it the author presents the metaphysical foundations of the libido theory, and discusses in connection with it the possibility of measurement through the value system of the individual and by various more technical methods, the concepts of regression and progression, transformation and symbol-making, entropy in the psychical system, conservation of energy, and certain primitive practices evidently serving to invest unusual objects with the libido necessary for their effective use. The rest of the book contains other seminal psychological theories that Jung developed during his profession life."
