Confederate Cavalry Saber with Scabbard Like many Confederate edged weapons, this sword has no visible maker's marks. It follows the U.S. 1840 Cavalry Pattern known as "Old Wrist Breaker" that was very popular with bladesmiths in the South. The overall length is 41 3/4 inches. The 36 inch lightly curved single fuller blade has a flat spine. It also has a two-branch brass guard, helmet-style pommel, and a thick iron wire wrap around the oilcloth grip. The main body of the scabbard is of one-piece rolled and soldered construction with a soldered-on iron drag and brass suspension bands. The top band is stamped "CS". Similar examples can be seen in "American Swords from the Philip Medicus Collection" by Flayderman and "Confederate Edged Weapons" by Albaugh. The hilt has taken on a deep aged patina and has mild dings and scuffs along with one small absent section of grip cloth near the pommel. The scabbard shows deep, dark aging, a few dents, and scattered spotting.
