Colt Sherrif's Model 1877 Double Action Revolver with Historic Coffeyville Kansas Sheriff Connelly Back Strap Inscription This is an example of a historic Colt Model 1877 DA action revolver that not only has the desirable etched barrel panel and the 3 1/2 inch ejector-less barrel; it was reportedly owned by Marshal Charlie Connelly, Coffeyville Kan. Coffeyville Kansas was the site of probably the most famous (at least attempted) bank robbery by the infamous Dalton Gang. The Dalton gang had turned to a life of crime after their older brother was killed by a horse thief in 1888, and it was rumored that the remaining Dalton brothers, who were marshals, had not been paid their month salaries. In all there were three Dalton brothers in the gang; Emmett "Em" Dalton, born in 1871; Robert "Bob" Renick Dalton, born 1869; and Gratton "Grat" Dalton, born 1861 along with Bill Power and Dick Broadwell. A fourth brother, William M. "Bill" Dalton (1866-1894), was an outlaw as well and mainly rode with the Wild Bunch. From 1891-1892, the Dalton gang went on a spree of train robberies throughout the Midwest. Later, they turned to bank robberies as easy targets and, in attempt to prove that they were better than the James Gang, hatched the plot to rob two bank simultaneously in broad daylight. They picked their prior hometown Coffeyville, Kansas as the town and on Oct 5th, 1892, the gang rode into town. Unbeknown to them, they were recognized by the town's people who alerted the marshall and numerous volunteers. The town set up an ambush and waylaid the gang after coming out of the banks. In the ensuing gun battle four of the town's people, Lucius Baldwin, George Cubine, Charles Brown and Marshall Connelly were killed, and three other citizens were wounded. The gang was decimated; Grat, Bob Dalton, Bill Power and Dick Broadwell were all killed. Emmitt Dalton was captured, convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but only served 14 years. This specific revolver has a full nickel plated finish, rare etched barrel panel markings, and the desirable 3 1/2 inch ejector-less barrel with the standard two-line address on the top. The back strap is engraved (in a jeweler's style) with an early Roman lettering, cut through the nickel plating, reading: "MARSHAL CHARLIE CONNELLY, COFFEYVILLE KAN." The various parts are all correctly serial numbered (matching) with the cylinder stamped on the back side with "405" and an assembly number "301" marked on the loading gate. It has the standard round blade front and frame groove rear sights with the heat blued action screws. It is fitted with a set of checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt near the top. It includes a survey sheet on the various features and markings on the revolver and a short description on the Coffeyville Museum. No source documentation or previous ownership has been supplied to writer, so we cannot guarantee authenticity.
