Historic Sheriff Presentation Inscribed Colt New Service Target Model Double Action Revolver with Scarce 44 Russian and Smith & Wesson Special Dual Caliber Marking Manufactured in 1920 with target sights, the desirable "NEW SERVICE RUSSIAN AND/S&W SPECIAL 44" caliber marking on the left side of the barrel, standard other factory markings, "PRESENTED TO/COL WALTER M. HOTZ./By members of sheriffs office/~JUNE . 1925~" inscribed on the flat top strap, checkered grip straps, and smooth grips. Walter M. Hotz served in the Pennsylvania National Guard First Infantry Regiment and then the U.S. military during the Spanish-American War before moving to Los Angeles where he served in the LA County Sheriff's Office. He was listed as a Lt. Colonel in the California Commandery, Los Angeles Chapter. In 1916, while serving as a deputy in Los Angeles, he raised a cavalry squadron to serve in the Pancho Villa Expedition. In 1926, he was the commanding officer of the new substation at 105 North Sunset Street, Temple City, California. The LA Sheriffs were regularly in gun battles with organized crime, especially during Prohibition. The period replacement grips are very good and have minor age cracks, moderate handling wear, a repaired break at the heel of the left panel, and attractive aged tones. Mechanically excellent. This is an interesting revolver connected to a man with a long career in the service of his country and community and with the added bonus of being a desirable Colt Flattop Target New Service Revolver with the scarce 44 Russian/Smith & Wesson dual caliber markings.
