Desirable and Fine Colt Model 1855 Percussion Revolving Military Pattern Carbine with Three-Digit Serial Number and Bayonet Lug Only approximately 18,300 "New Model" revolving rifles, carbines, and shotguns were manufactured in a variety of configurations c. 1855 to 1864. Of these 18,300 manufactured, only 2,300 where .56 caliber carbines with 21 inch barrels per the data reported on pages 182-183 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson. This three-digit serial number carbine is an even rarer variation with the a short rectangular lug on the right for mounting a bayonet, no forearm, military pattern blue, and sling swivels mounted on the bottom of the frame and trigger guard. It also features a German silver blade front sight, three-leaf rear sight, "COL. COLT HARTFORD CT. U.S.A" marked in the top strap groove, "PATENTED SEPT 10th 1850" in one cylinder flute, "COLTS/PATENT" and "Nov 24 1857" marked on the upper tang followed by the matching serial number at the rear, the matching serial number also visible on the bottom of the barrel and lower tang as well as the toe of the buttplate, "56 CAL./K" on the left side of the trigger guard, and a smooth straight wrist stock with a steel buttplate. Colt made Model 1855 artillery pattern carbines, although they are listed with 24 inch barrels whereas this example has a 21 inch barrel.
