Interesting Documented Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver From Albert Foster Sr. Collection Manufactured in 1858, this is a very fine example of a Colt Model 1849 percussion revolver. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line New York City address inside brackets. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT." The cylinder has the stagecoach hold up scene and is marked "COLTS PATENT/No148011." The matching numbers are marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, loading lever, cylinder pin and barrel wedge. Casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever, silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap, and blue remaining parts. Fitted with a smooth one piece varnished walnut grip. The partitioned case is lined in brown velvet and contains two Eley Brothers tins, single face eagle powder flask, two-cavity Colt's patent bullet mold and one package of .31 caliber combustible envelop cartridges. According to research notes provided by the consignor an old Serven listing, and an advertisement for the revolver by Arnold Marcus Chernoff, Ltd. In the included copy of "The Gun Report" from April 1977, the revolver's provenance is as follows: the famed Albert Foster Collection until it was sold in September 1948 by Colt author James Serven as being presented to J.N. Ackerman by General Joseph Hooker, a Union Civil War officer best known for being defeated by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. The affidavit mentioned in the Serven listing is not included, and thus, the presentation has not been confirmed. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1849 BBL: 4 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 31 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: walnut Serial Number: 148011 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine.
