Clash Of The Titans (1981) Harryhausen Original Two Headed Orthrus Production Maquette - Last year we lost one of the all time great special effects visionaries and geniuses. Ray Harryhausen took the art form of "stop motion" photography to levels never before seen. Not even the explosion of GCI effects could ever create the special "reality" of his amazing monsters and creatures. Directors like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and James Cameron "sit at his feet" when it came to his work. For many, the skeleton battle in "Jason and the Argonauts" is now, and will forever be considered the greatest effects battle ever created. Harryhausen's last film was the box office sensation "Clash of the Titans" (1981). Again, he created a vast array of monsters, creatures and mythological wonders (like Medusa and Pegasus). In the story mortal Perseus (Harry Hamlin) fights to win the hand of Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker). However in order to do this he must defeat the underwater monster Kraken. The only way this can be done by a mortal is to present him with the head of Medusa, which will turn him into stone. Thus Perseus finds himself on Medusa's island. There he must fight off various enemies before getting into her lair. One of the most deadly is the two-headed dog Orthrus. This was a true Harryhausen specialty. He would spend weeks if not months designing these creatures so that not only would they be unforgettable, but designed in such a way to utilize the best of his stop-motion technique. This is one of the final original maquettes designed by Harryhausen of Orthrus. It comes from Harryhausen's studio, and is beautifully crafted in hard resin and then painstakingly painted. It was used as a reference for the actual armature creatures used to create the motion of the beast. It comes from the treasured collection of Jerry Neeley, well-known film historian, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of industry people would come from miles to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic. This rare piece of Hollywood special effects history comes with a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neely's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. (Orthrus maquette is approx 9" long and 6" high).
