Clara Barton 3x Signed Receipt for Hospital Dividend!
ALS

Remarkable handwritten receipt signed three times by Clara Barton, Glen Echo, Maryland, and dated April 24, 1911. The document, written entirely in Barton's hand, documents receipt of a $10.00 check from H. P. Barton drawn on the Central National Bank of Los Angeles as a dividend relating to Clara Barton Hospital. The three times signed receipt includes two full signatures ("Clara Barton") and one abbreviated surname ("Barton"), making it an exceptionally desirable example of Barton's handwriting. Pencil marks on verso, expected toning and folds, else fine, boldly signed. Measures 6" x 8.25".

Clara Barton (1821-1912), known as the "Angel of the Battlefield," was among the most influential humanitarian figures in American history. During the Civil War she risked her life delivering medical supplies and caring for wounded soldiers directly on the battlefield, earning a national reputation for compassion and courage.

Following the war, Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881 and served as its first president for more than two decades. She expanded the organization's mission beyond wartime relief to include responses to natural disasters, epidemics, and humanitarian crises, permanently shaping modern disaster relief in the United States.

This receipt was written within the final year of Barton's life from her longtime residence at Glen Echo, Maryland, after she had retired from leadership of the American Red Cross. Even in retirement, she remained involved with charitable and philanthropic endeavors bearing her name, including the Clara Barton Hospital referenced in this document. Material from this late period is particularly desirable, as examples of her handwriting and signatures become increasingly scarce during the final months of her life.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
