1861 U.S. Model Civil War Navy Saber Bayonet has a 22.5" steel blade with a ribbed cast-brass grip with cross-guard, measuring 27.5" overall with its Brass-capped Scabbard, complete with a belt loop sword frog, all original, Very Fine.
U.S. Model 1861 Saber Bayonet, blade plus scabbard, was manufactured to fit the U.S. Model 1861 Navy "Plymouth" Rifle. Both were designed by John A. Dalhgren of the U.S. Navy who founded his design ideas on the French "Carabine Tige" rifle and bayonet. Dahlgren designed two bayonets to fit his rifle, a short Bowie Knife bayonet and the longer, Yataghan style saber bayonet currently offered. Once completed, the saber bayonets were shipped to the Whitney Arms Company who hand fitted each bayonet to a specific rifle and then marked the set with a matching number prior to shipping them to the US Navy. This method of fitting bayonets to rifles was limiting in that bayonets could not be switched between rifles without additional work. While several different arms suppliers manufactured these bayonets before and during the Civil War, this example comes from the "Navy Arms Company," as indicated by a stamp on the ricasso. The rifle lock in its leather hilt is in perfect working order. While the blade does bear some trivial rust spots and streaks from the sheath, the overall package is very presentable and collectible for Civil War or Naval Arms specialists.
