Civil War U.S. Remington Model 1863 Remington Zouave Percussion Rifle with Liege Proofs and Bayonet Manufactured during the Civil War (circa 1862 to 1865) with a total production of only approximately 12,500. The lock is dated 1863 behind the hammer, eagle/shield over "U.S." and "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y." in front of the hammer and there is a Sub-Inspectors "S" stamped at the front. The top of the barrel at the breech is dated "1863" over the "V/P/eagle head" proofs. The left rear flat is marked "STEEL" and "R.K.A." The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is a European military style folding leaf with graduation markings of "120, "180", "240" and "300" on the left side with added "8", "10", "12" and "14" above the first set of numbers, and the added numbers are repeated on the right side. The right side of the barrel at the rear sight and the stock are stamped "25". Directly to the right rear of the rear sight is a the Belgium oval "E/LG/*" proofmark. There is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel 3 inches back of the muzzle. The barrel is blue, casehardened lock and hammer with all brass mountings. Iron ramrod with tulip head. Mounted with a full one-piece straight grip walnut stock with a brass forend cap, carbine style buttplate and patch box. The patch box is stamped with an "L" and the buttplate tang is stamped with "US" and a small "L". The left stock flat is marked with a clear "HDJ" and "BH" boxed cartouche. The patch box contains an extra percussion nipple. Comes with a 20 inch sword bayonet with brass handle and brass and leather scabbard. The handle of the bayonet is stamped with an "S", "H" and "BH". "W Pa." is crudely scratched into the guard. The hammer and lock retain most of the bright case colors. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is fine with numerous dents on the forearm area, and overall some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action s excellent. The bayonet is very good with some minor pitting and spotting. The otherwise fine scabbard shows cracking in the mostly intact leather and an aged patina on the brass.
