Assembly photograph album, 1861 consisting of individually signed photo of the 84th New York State Legislature. Pebbled leather album, fully  dis-bound album with gilt embossing, 7.75" x 11". Contains thirty-eight pages with 143 individually signed oval shaped sepia photographs each adhered to card stock of the 84th New York State Legislature. Representing members of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly who met from January 1 to April 16, 1861, during the third year of Edwin D. Morgan's governorship in Albany. Book unbound with each page loose. Original decorative end papers present, with the rear end papers scuffed. Leather boards edge worn with some leather missing. Ideal for either rebinding, or framing the pages individually.

 

Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1846, 32 Senators and 128 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (four districts) and Kings County (two districts). The Assembly districts were made up of entire towns, or city wards, forming a contiguous area, all within the same county.
