c. 1861 New Hampshire Volunteer Militia 4th Regiment Civil War Silver Plated Brass Hat Badge with Spread-Winged Eagle Surmount and New Hampshire State Seal at Center, Crossed Swords, Raised Numeral "4", Very Fine.
A boldly designed and impressive heavy hat badge that measures 2.0" x 2.25" overall. It appears to be silver plated brass, retaining considerable original silver surfaces with attractive age patina throughout. The badge is of complex multi-element construction. At the top is a finely detailed spread-winged Heraldic American Eagle with head turned to its right, wings fully extended, rendered in high relief with individually delineated feathers clearly visible. Immediately below the Eagle is a horizontal bar element above the central hexagonal Star-form badge whose six points are formed by three pairs of crossed artillery swords rendered in twisted rope-form relief, a bold and martial design element. At center is a large circular roundel bearing the New Hampshire State Seal.
The the legend "New Hampshire Vol. Militia" inscribed around its circumference. The seal itself depicts a period Sailing Ship on stocks with the rising sun visible in the background, surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves at its base. Beneath the central roundel is a shield-form panel with a finely executed pebbled or granulated background texture, at the center of which is mounted a large raised numeral "4" identifying the regiment. No maker's mark is present. The original mounting hardware is fully attached on the reverse and remains fully working.
The NEW HAMPSHIRE VOLUNTEER MILITIA was among the earliest state forces to respond to President Abraham Lincoln's April 1861 call for 75,000 volunteers following the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter.
New Hampshire organized several regiments in rapid succession, the 4th Regiment among them, and these units went on to serve with distinction throughout the conflict. Hat badges such as the present example were worn affixed to the dress or forage cap and served to identify the wearer's regiment and state affiliation, functioning as both a practical military identifier and a proud declaration of state loyalty during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
