Exceptional, Unusual New Jersey Civil War Contract Model 1861 Percussion Rifle-Musket and Bayonet without a Maker's Mark This rifle is very unusual in that the lock plate has no maker's marks. The barrel has the "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. "N.J" is stamped on the left barrel flat and stock flat. The eagle head is different from the one found on Model 1861s by most manufacturers but is the same as the one found on known Savage manufactured New Jersey contract rifles suggesting the rifle was manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire Arms Co. Like this example, other known Savage NJ rifles had no "STEEL" marking on the left flat, but why the lock would not have been stamped with the maker's mark or the eagle motif is not known. The tail of the lock and the barrel are dated "1863." There are some small single letter inspection marks on the bottom of the barrel and just behind the trigger guard tang. The buttplate is marked "US." The socket bayonet does not quite correctly fit the barrel and has "US/J" on the bottom of the blade. Manufacturer: Savage Revolving Firearms Co Model: 1861 BBL: 40 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 percussion Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Excellent, as issued, with crisp armory bright steel, 98% plus blue finish on the rear sight, some minor pitting and spotting, and scattered minor marks and scratches throughout. The stock is excellent with raised feathered grain and crisp marking. Mechanically excellent.
