Exceptional Civil War Greene Underhammer Breech Loading Rifle with Bayonet Only 1,500 U.S. and 3,000 Russian contract Greene rifles were manufactured by A.H. Waters around 1859 to the early 1860s. 900 were purchased by the U.S. government, and they are often considered the first bolt action rifle purchased by the U.S. government. Technically the bolt mechanism is simply a loading feature, and the action is self operates via a manually cocked ring hammer ahead of the trigger guard. The Green used two bullets at a time. One in front of the powder charge for the actual projectile, and one behind the charge to act as a gas seal. The "seal" bullet is then pushed forward when the rifle is reloaded. Although the bore appears smooth, it actually has an oval type of rifling invented by London gunmaker Charles Lancaster. It is marked "GREENE'S PATENT/NOV. 17 1857." on the upper tang and features a bayonet lug/blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, three barrel bands, cleaning rod, and buttplate with trapdoor for a cleaning brush aperture (not included), straight wrist walnut stock, and sling swivels mounted on the middle barrel band and lower tang. A standard socket bayonet is included. Manufacturer: Greene Model: Underhammer BBL: 36 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 53 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Excellent with 90% of the brown finish, 85% plus of the bright original blue on the small parts and lower tang, 85% plus original case colors, some minor nicks and scratches, and some small spots of light oxidation. The stock is also excellent and has scattered minor scrapes and dings typical of storage, a crack forming on the right side of the wrist, and some small chips. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very good and has mottled brown patina and some mild pitting. Overall a nice example of a very rare and significant U.S. military rifle.
