SHIPPEN, Edward (1729-1806) was a lawyer, judge, government official, and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Like his father and grandfather before him, Shippen was a slave owner. Document Signed “Edw Shippen, Jr.” as prothonotary of the Supreme Court, Philadelphia, 1pp., April 11, 1763, being a citizenship paper, seal is present, separated along one fold, small fold tears easily repairable, VG. In part, “William Allen ... having inhabited and resided for Seven years in His Majesty’s Colonies in America ... having taken the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper withing three months ... took the oath ... and thereupon was admitted to be His Majesty’s natural born Subject ...”
