Cadwallader Colden
City of New York, March 28, 1775
Citation Issued in the Last Weeks Before the NY Provincial Congress Convenes in 1775
Document

Citation issued by command of Cadwallader Colden in 1775. 1p of a bifolium, 7.75" x 13"; City of New York; March 28, 1775. Citation writ issued by Colden as Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief of New York to John Roberts to bring John Hopper and Wessel Hopper to appear at the Prerogative Office of the Province of New York. The men were named executors in the last will and testament of Deborah Cozine, deceased. Signed at the conclusion, "Sam Bayard, Junr." as deputy secretary. A long endorsement on the second page by Roberts records that he has served the men with the citation and that they will appear with the deceased's will on or before April 4, 1775. Light offsetting at bottom, with folds and toning.

Cadwallader Colden (1688-1776) served as lieutenant governor and as acting governor in 1760–1761, 1763–1765, 1769–1770, and 1774–1775, making him the acting chief executive for much of the pre-Revolutionary period. As tensions escalated in 1775, the elderly Colden found himself increasingly at odds with colonial resistance movements. Although Colden's practical influence was waning and faced mounting opposition, he was still the legitimate royal representative with legal authority to conduct official business such as issuing this cite. The New York Provincial Congress would be elected and convened the following month after Lexington and Concord. Colden remained in New York City under British protection but was largely powerless outside of areas under direct British military control.
