East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 15th to 19th century CE. A lacquered and gilt wood statue of the bodhisattva Guanyin, seated in a meditative pose with hands folded in dhyana mudra, resting atop a blooming lotus pedestal on a circular base. A separate mandorla back panel forming a halo is affixed to the pedestal. Remains of gold gilding are visible on the robes, with cinnabar red pigment on the base. The mandorla obscures the verso of the figure; close inspection reveals a square panel covering a niche in Guanyin's back, consistent with a consecration cavity used for holding prayers, relics, or offerings. The mandorla panel appears to be a later addition, indicated by the nail placements and a groove in the pedestal that would originally have supported a tenon-fitted backplate. Size: 5.25" W x 12.75" H (13.3 cm x 32.4 cm); gold quality: 22%

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
