"The classic on the topic! Covers an area of extreme interest, the contest between Sweden's Charles XII & Peter The Great of Russia for hegemony over Northern Europe at the close of the 17th century & beginning of the 19th Century. Far from being the absolute, rigid and corrupted king which marked many of the contemporary rulers of Europe during that time, the book gives deep insights into a truly remarkable man and his thoughts and actions. He was instrumental for the survival of Sweden, and its powers to influence the course of action in Europe. He was also seen as one of the few men capable of halting Russian intrusions into eastern Europe during that period. Losing his mother and father at the age of 14-15 he became one of the youngest kings ever in Swedish history, and without doubt its greatest military commander, Charles XDII protected his country against the hostile forces of Tsar Peter. Unfortunately this side of him is not very well known even in his homeland, where he's instead seen as a man who dragged Sweden into never ending wars that exhausted the country's resources. His importance to present day Neo-Nazis in Sweden, doesn't help his legacy. For any one, remotely interested in 18th century European history, and the tactics of a truly formidable commander this is a great book. An index, bibliography, & extensive notes sections, makes further research easier."
