CHARLES EDWIN LEWIS GREEN
American / Boston, 1844-1915

Oil on canvas.
Signed "C.E.L. Green" lower right hand corner. A framed painting depicting a tranquil coastal harbor scene with fishing boats, small figures on a sandy shore, and rolling green hills beneath a moody overcast sky.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Charles Edwin Lewis Green (1844–1915) was an American impressionist and tonalist painter celebrated for his evocative coastal and landscape scenes of Massachusetts. Born in 1844, he spent his early years as an entrepreneur, using his business earnings to fund his true passion — art — and did not begin painting professionally until age 37, following his father's death in 1881. Largely self-directed in his early development, his primary tutor was Charles Woodbury at the Lynn Evening Drawing School, and he became a proud member of the Lynn Beach Painters, drawing deep influence from the French and Dutch Old Masters. A devoted practitioner of plein-air painting, Green specialized in coastal seascapes and landscapes, occasionally weaving in livestock, marine themes, and local figures. His career gained significant momentum after a landmark 1887 exhibition organized by promoter J. Eastman Chase, in which 59 works sold, funding travels through England, France, and Italy — most formatively, time spent in Cornwall, England, where he further refined techniques such as atmospheric perspective. He also served his community as a Lynn councilman and occasional instructor at the Lynn Evening Drawing School. His work is held in prominent collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fogg Art Museum, and the Peabody Essex Museum. Green retired to Lynn in 1910 and passed away there in 1915.
