August 22, 1890-Dated, Certified Manuscript Document (Congressional Medal of Honor Winner), Signed, "Charles A. Taggart", 37th Mass. Volunteers, Co. B., his "Oath" to become a pension agent with approval, 1 page, measuring 9.75" x 7.75", Albany, New York, Very Fine.
This boldly Signed "Charles A. Taggart" Handwritten Offical Government Document reads, in part:
"... I, Charles A. Taggart do solemnly swear that I will support protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States..."
Approved with a Blue U.S. Pension Office Stamp. Charles A. Taggart (1843-1938) was a Union Army soldier in the American Civil War who received the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was mustered into Co. B, 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on Aug. 30, 1862, and was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Mustered out at Washington, D.C. on June 21, 1865. The regimental color guard of nine men had been shot down, and Taggart rushed forward to seize the colors, which had fallen less than 20 feet from enemy lines. He received the Medal of Honor about a month later, on May 10, 1865. His actual Medal of Honor is now held by the Blandford Historical Society in Massachusetts.
Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his action at the Battle of Sailor's Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865, when he captured a Confederate Battle Flag, and when running back with it to his Union lines, he was nearly killed by his own men who mistook him for a charging Confederate soldier! A pencil notation on the inside blank page reads: "Captured Confederate flag at battle of Sailors Creek Virginia, April 6, 1865...". Bright Blue circular stamp of the U S PENSION OFFICE. - AUG 30, 1890 "A" (Approved), nicely placed at the upper right away from the written text.
Charles Taggart was born January 17, 1843, in Blandford, Massachusetts, and was living in Otis, Massachusetts, when he enlisted. He was just 19 years old when the 37th Massachusetts was mustered into service on August 30, 1862; within a week the regiment was sent to Washington, and three months later it saw its first major action at Fredericksburg.
At Gettysburg the regiment came under fire from hostile batteries while advancing toward the Round Tops, losing six killed and 25 wounded in a moment. Taggart was one of eight men in his company wounded in that battle.
His Medal of Honor action came near the very end of the Civil War. At the Battle of Sayler's Creek on April 6, 1865, he captured a battle flag, specifically at Deatonsville, part of the Sailor's Creek fighting in Virginia, with the action simply cited as "Capture of flag".
A local historical account adds color to the moment: the regimental color guard of nine men had been shot down, and Taggart rushed forward to seize the colors, which had fallen less than 20 feet from enemy lines. He received the Medal of Honor about a month later, on May 10, 1865.
After the war he farmed in Blandford, and in his later years lived at the Soldiers' National Home in Ohio. He last visited Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1930 for a reunion of the few surviving veterans of the 37th, where he posed for a group portrait. He died April 10, 1938, at age 95, and is buried at Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. His actual Medal of Honor is now held by the Blandford Historical Society in Massachusetts.
