She stayed briefly with him in Redlands before moving to Berkeley where she opened a studio and studied with William Keith. In California, her art interest turned to depictions of marine scenes and sunsets, and she supported herself the remainder of her life with her art. Most of her subjects came from the Bay Area and her forte was coastla scenes with waves crashing against rocks. She she also painted in Monterey, Santa Barbara and at Lake Tahoe. She remained a close friend and sketching partner with William Keith and also of Leola Coggins. Exhibition venues included the Brooklyn Art Association, San Francisco Art Association, National Academy of Design, and the Art Association of Berkeley. Newhall died in Berkeley in 1917.
