Extraordinary Panel Scene Engraved 19th Century Takedown Air Rifle with Presentation Case and Accessories This is a cased 1820s air rifle by an unknown maker with accessories. The frame features engraved scrollwork, borders, and a panel scene on top of the frame. The scrollwork extends to the hammer, trigger guard and breech plug. The top of the breech plug is engraved with a large floral blossom featuring an animal head in the center. The Damascus barrel is rifled and is equipped with dovetail blade front and notch rear sights. The smooth forearm has a silver forend cap. The rifle comes with two walnut and Damascus metal buttstocks. The buttstock also acts as the air reserve, which features engraved accents towards the butt. The stocks are fitted with flat metal buttplates that feature engraved scrollwork on the tang. The partitioned takedown case has brass hardware and royal purple velvet lining. The accessories include an air pump, W.T. Hancock bullet mold marked "380," oiler, screwdriver, contemporary leather sling and spanner wrench. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Air Gun BBL: 31 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 36 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Other Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% plus original brown Damascus striping with a balance a smooth gray patina. There is moderate pitting visible on the lower solid rib and ramrod pipes. The wood is also very fine with a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. The air reserves retain traces of the original Damascus, otherwise a mottled brown-gray patina. There are some minor dings on one of the air reserves. The case is fine with scattered handling/storage marks and some high spot wear to the lining. A solid example of a rare 1820s takedown air rifle with case and accessories.
