Carl Sorensen Bronze Vase
C. 1930s, USA
Carl Sorensen bronze vase is a highly collectible piece of early 20th-century American decorative art. Produced primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, these vases beautifully bridge the gap between the organic textures of the Arts and Crafts movement and the geometric restraint of early Art Deco design. Sorensen, a Danish-born metalworker who crafted pieces in Philadelphia and later designed for Tiffany Studios in New York, is renowned for his signature chemical patination techniques.Distinguishing Design FeaturesMottled Verdigris Patina: Sorensen's most recognizable trademark is a vibrant, variegated green verdigris finish. This intentionally controlled chemical oxidation creates a striking contrast against warm, polished bronze highlights that peek through the trim, base, or interior. Trumpet Silhouette: The most iconic Carl Sorensen vase shape is the flared trumpet vessel. These often sit on a heavy, stepped circular base with rhythmic horizontal banding wrapped around the lower body.
