Signed and dated "C.A. Brendel '06" at lower right, this oil study depicts a herd of horses and mules standing in loose formation across an open plain beneath a blue sky, their backs draped with colorful blankets and pack coverings. Framed.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Carl Alexander Brendel (German, 1877–1945) was born in Weimar, the son of painter Albert Brendel, and trained at the Weimar School of Art under Carl Frithjof Smith before continuing his studies at the Academie Julian in Paris and as a master student of Albert Hertel and Paul Friedrich Meyerheim at the Berlin Academy, with a Prussian Academy of Arts scholarship taking him to Rome in 1908-09. Around 1905/06 he began working in graphic techniques, producing numerous color woodcuts between 1909 and 1919, and from 1911 lived with his wife, photographer Aura Hertwig, in a house in Buschmühle near Frankfurt an der Oder, where his work came to focus largely on Oder river landscapes. He served as a professor at the Weimar School of Art from 1921 to 1924, was a member of several artists' associations including the Deutscher Künstlerbund Weimar and the Verein Berliner Künstler, and exhibited regularly at the Berlin art exhibitions and the Munich Glaspalast. Known primarily as an animal and landscape painter as well as a woodcutter and illustrator, Brendel died in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1945.
