Native American, Caddo, ca. 1200–1600 CE. A globular utility jar coiled from buff earthenware, its rounded body swelling to a short, slightly everted rim left uneven by hand. Around the shoulder and lower body run panels of cross-hatched incising framed by chevrons, the field enlivened by dense punctation that catches raking light. Vertical appliqued ridges and low bosses interrupt the surface, lending both grip and rhythm to an otherwise unburnished ground. The clay retains fire clouds and the soft ochre-to-grey mottling of open firing. Made by a Caddoan potter of the Trans-Mississippi South, such thick-walled, textured vessels served cooking and storage rather than mortuary display, their utilitarian ancestry legible in every coil seam. The decoration, at once functional and expressive, marks the maker's fluency in a ceramic tradition passed through generations of Caddo households. Size: 7.5" D x 8.6" H (19.1 cm D x 21.8 cm H).

The Caddo peoples of what is now eastern Texas, western Louisiana, southwestern Arkansas, and southeastern Oklahoma were among the most accomplished ceramicists of the North American Southeast. Their potters worked without the wheel, building vessels by coiling and paddling, then decorating with incising, engraving, punctation, and applique. Utility wares like this jar, distinguished from the finely engraved bottles reserved for burials, carried the everyday labor of the household: cooking over hearths, storing grain and water. The recurring cross-hatch and chevron vocabulary seen here belongs to a shared design grammar that archaeologists use to trace regional phases across the Caddo homeland.
