Native American, Caddo, ca. 1200–1600 CE. A globular earthenware jar rising from a rounded base to a gently flaring, everted rim. The buff-to-terracotta surface carries the smoky, mottled fire clouds of open pit firing, warm ochres shading into ashen grays. Encircling the shoulder is a raised band of punctated and appliqued clay, a modest but deliberate register of decoration where the constricted neck meets the swelling body. Small nubbin lugs and a vertical incised stroke break the otherwise unburnished wall. Hand-built by coiling, the vessel was a utilitarian container, likely used for storing or preparing foodstuffs within a Caddo household of the Trans-Mississippi South. Its unpretentious form and tactile, hand-worked surface speak to the domestic ceramic tradition of the ancestral Caddo peoples of present-day Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Size: 6.9" D x 7.9" H (17.5 cm D x 20.1 cm H).

The Caddo built a sophisticated mound-building society across the Trans-Mississippi South, flourishing from roughly 900 CE through European contact. Their potters are celebrated for a wide vocabulary of forms, from finely engraved bottles and carinated bowls to plainer domestic jars such as this one. Utility wares like this vessel, tempered with grog or crushed shell and finished with restrained appliqued or punctated collars, formed the backbone of everyday cooking and storage. They circulated widely through Caddo exchange networks, and their surface treatments help archaeologists assign types and phases within the long Caddo sequence.

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored with resurfacing over break lines; all expertly done and very difficult to detect. Light weathering to surface as commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent presentation with scattered earthen deposits.
