c. 1778 Matched Pair German Revolutionary War Matched Copper Engravings, Rudolf Erich Raspe (1736-1794), titled, "Israel Putnam, General-Major der Americaner" and "Der Americanische Gener. Arnold," Nuremberg, Framed, both Choice Very Fine.
The present Matched Pair comprises two of the most compelling subjects in Raspe's American Revolutionary War Portrait Series:
1. The first depicts ISRAEL PUTNAM (1718-1790), the celebrated Connecticut-born Major General of the Continental Army, famous for his legendary command at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, shown in half-length view in Continental Army uniform with tricorn hat within an octagonal architectural frame, captioned in German script "Israel Putnam, Esqr., General-Major der Americaner."
2. The second depicts BENEDICT ARNOLD (1741-1801), the brilliant but ultimately notorious American general whose military victories at Fort Ticonderoga, the Siege of Fort Stanwix, and the Battle of Saratoga made him the most celebrated American combat commander of the early war years before his 1780 defection to the British. Here shown in half-length view within an oval landscape vignette, captioned "Der Americanische Gener. Arnold."
Both engravings are referenced in the Carson Catalogue under number 3740, confirming their scholarly documentation within the standard reference literature on American Revolutionary War era portrait prints. The engravings present in very fine condition with strong contrast and fine detail, each handsomely framed in matching modern black frames with gold accent inner and outer rims, the overall frame size about12.0" x 9.0" each. Rudolf Erich Raspe was an 18th-century author and librarian, best known for his association with the legendary figure Baron Mnchausen. Born into a working-class family, he studied at the universities of Gttingen and Leipzig before embarking on a career that included tutoring and library work.
Raspe was a multifaceted individual who translated philosophical works, wrote poetry, and co-founded a publication called The Cassel Spectator. His scientific interests earned him recognition from the Royal Society of England, although his career took a tumultuous turn when he was arrested for theft during a mission to collect ancient gems in Italy.
After escaping to England, he became involved with notable figures of the time but faced expulsion from the Royal Society due to his misconduct. Raspe ultimately achieved fame with his book about Baron Mnchausen's tall tales, which blended fact and fiction, sparking a literary trend in humorous storytelling. He later attempted to pursue a scheme involving precious metals but died in relative obscurity in Ireland in 1794. (https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/biography/rudolf-erich-raspe)
