c. 1856 A steel/copper-plate engraved portrait of James Monroe (fifth U.S. president), produced c. 1856, after Gilbert Stuart's well-known oil portrait, with the engraving credited to "Stewart & C. Holl" and including a vignette of Lafayette's public entry into New York, Framed, Choice Very Fine.
This finely engraved steel portrait derives from the celebrated original painted from life by GILBERT STUART (1755-1828), America's foremost portraitist of the early Republic, and was engraved by C. HOLL for an 1856 publication. The central oval bust portrait depicts Monroe in three-quarter view wearing a dark coat with a high collar and an elaborately tied white cravat, his hair swept back in the fashion of the period, his expression conveying the calm dignity associated with Stuart's presidential portraiture. The portrait is set within a richly engraved oval cartouche border of scrolling acanthus leaf and foliate ornament, surmounted by a martial trophy vignette of a furled American flag, a drum, and cannon barrels. It is centered below by a finely detailed small vignette depicting the public entry of Lafayette into New York, with the supporting credit lines "Stuart." and at lower left and "C. Holl." being at lower right identifying the original artist and engraver respectively. The printed facsimile signature "James Monroe" appears in a flowing script beneath the cartouche. The printed sheet measures 6.5" x 9.0" (by sight), is handsomely presented in a double mat with black fillet and complementary outer mat, in an overall in a choice period looking modern wood frame measuring 18.0" x 15.0", under special UV Plexiglas ready for immediate display. This engraving presents in very fine condition with strong contrast and fine detail throughout.
Gilbert Stuart was one of 18th century America's master portrait artists. Stuart is best known for his unfinished Athenaeum portrait of George Washington. This is the image seen on the U.S. one dollar bill. Gilbert Stuart is widely considered to be one of America's foremost portraitists.
Charles Holl was a prominent Stipple Engraver born in 1810 in London. He operated a successful business creating reproduction prints of famous works from numerous different artists using the technique of Stipple Engraving.
