Very Fine Burnside Rifle Co. Model 1865 Spencer Repeating Carbine 34,000 Burnside Rifle Co. Model 1865 Spencer carbines were manufactured beginning late in the Civil War and first delivered early in the post-war era. Nearly all were used to fulfill U.S. Government contracts. This example has no cartouche on the stock or inspector's mark on the barrel indicating it was not purchased by the government. It is known that the U.S. government rejected arms from multiple contractors after the war ended for vague or outright untrue reasons simply out of an effort to save the government money. This one was not fitted with a Stabler cut-off which was preferred by the government. Thousands of Spencers and other firearms were already flowing into the hands of former soldiers and civilians for low sums, and thousands of surplus guns made their way to the West. There are period photographs of both white civilians and Native Americans armed with Spencers. The carbine otherwise has the standard markings and features and is in high condition. Manufacturer: Burnside Rifle Co Model: 1865 BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 56-50 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 21012 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine overall with 85% original blue finish, 70% plus original case colors, some light spotting, general minor scratches and dings, a chip at the tail of the forearm, and crisp markings. Mechanically excellent. This is overall a very attractive and exceptional Model 1865 Spencer carbine.
