1862 Civil War Choice Patriotic, "Buly for Lincoln" Colorful Hand-Written Political Sentiment on a Abraham Lincoln Stamped Patriotic Postal Cover (Walcott 203), by an Identified Union Soldier, Choice Very Fine.
This very vivid Abraham Lincoln Patriotic Cover has great Political Sentiment. Written on a colorful red and blue printed white Patriotic Political Cover (Walcott 203). Its design has a central Portrait of Abraham Lincoln set in an oval frame with an American Eagle above. Accouterments of War all around (the red is off register) on face at Left of Cover addressed to Williamston, Mich., with Scott #65, 3c Rose Red Stamp, tied by black Jackson/Mich double-circle stamp. On its back is stenciled return address of "C. Bulter, Co. H.", with a manuscript "26 Regt." written in. Next to the work "Lincoln" written the sender has written "buly (sic) for". Scarce sentiment on an envelope that is slightly reduced at right from when opened.
The sender of this cover is identified as "Chauncey Butler" (writing to his father of the same name) of Williamstown, Michigan who was 31 years old when he enlisted on 8/12/1862 as a Corporal. On 9/25/1862 he mustered into "H" Co. MI 26th Infantry. Sadly, he died of wounds on 5/21/1864 at Alexandria, VA., having been wounded 5/12/1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA.. Butler's regiment took part in all the movements of the Army of the Potomac and gained the reputation of being the best skirmish regiment in the army, and was often selected to precede the division to come in contact with the enemy, and thereby took part in many hazardous advances. A rarer Abraham Lincoln Patriotic Cover written by a Union hero who died from battle wounds just two years after this cover was posted.
