Bruce Lee & "Green Hornet" Van Williams Signed 1967 Program From Int'l Karate Comp; Fantastic Provenance!
Signed Menu/Program

An official program from the 1967 International Karate Championships held in Long Beach, California. 12pp, 8.5" x 11", [Long Beach, CA], [July 30, 1967]. Boldly signed in blue ballpoint pen on the Demonstrations page as "Bruce Lee", with an additional inscription by his 'Green Hornet' co-star Van Williams, who also attended the event. Both signatures were personally acquired by the nephew of Ed Parker, founder of American Kenpo Karate and the tournament's executive producer. Together with four modern photographs captured during the event, including one with Lee and Williams together looking at the program. Exhibits moderate handling creases and edge wear throughout. Minor rust staining from staples present to some pages. Overall, very good.

Accompanied by a signed letter of authenticity from its original owner, Jay Mederios, in which he describes how the item was acquired. In part: "I certify that Bruce Lee and Van Williams signed this program to me at the 1967 International Karate Championships, which I attended with my father and with my uncle, Ed Parker, founder of American Kenpo Karate."

Ed Parker (1931-1990) was an American martial artist who founded and codified the art of American Kenpo. Born in Honolulu, Parker began training in Judo at an early age, and later studied boxing. After being introduced to Kenpo in the 1940s, he became a student of William Chow (1914-1987) and was promoted to the rank of black belt in 1956. Parker, seeing that modern times posed new situations that were not addressed in traditional Kenpo, adapted the art to make it more easily applicable to the streets of America. He called his adapted style American Kenpo Karate.

The 1967 Long Beach International Karate Championships marked Lee's second demonstration at the event. He first appeared at the inaugural tournament in 1964, where he performed his famous one-inch punch and two-finger push-ups. His return three years later was marked by a blindfolded demonstration of Chi Sau, in addition to a sparring match which implemented his Jeet Kune Do style of motion. Footage from the event was later reviewed by Black Belt magazine in 1995, concluding that "the action is as fast and furious as anything in Lee's films."
