After Frederic Remington (American, 1861 to 1909). "Broncho Buster" brass, late 20th century. Edition 23 of 100. Signed and numbered on integral base. Cast in patinated brass after Frederic Remington's "Bronco Buster." A cowboy rides a rearing bronco, his body pitched forward, one arm raised with a coiled quirt, as the horse throws its head and paws the air. The figure rests on a textured naturalistic base and a shaped gray marble plinth with an engraved plaque reading "Bronco Buster by Frederic Remington." The cast base carries a molded "Frederic Remington" signature and the number 23/100. ** This is an after-cast in brass, not a lifetime or estate bronze.** Size: 19" W x 22.5" H x 11" D (48.3 cm W x 57.1 cm H x 27.9 cm D); on included custom stand: 19" W x 24.25" H x 11" D (48.3 cm W x 61.6 cm H x 27.9 cm D).

Frederic Remington modeled "The Broncho Buster" in 1895, copyrighting it that October. It was his first venture into sculpture and, by tradition, the first bronze cast of an American cowboy. He drew the subject, a rider subduing a plunging horse, from his earlier illustration "Pitching Broncho," which ran in Harper's Weekly on April 30, 1892. The rugged immediacy of his paintings translated directly into the round, and the statuette was quickly embraced as a defining image of the frontier cowboy.

The lifetime edition was initially sand-cast at the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company, then produced by the lost-wax method at Roman Bronze Works after 1900. Following Remington's death in 1909, his widow Eva Remington (1859-1918) authorized further casts from the foundry molds; lacking the artist's exacting oversight of casting and coloring, these estate bronzes are generally considered less refined than the lifetime examples. The present work is neither: it is a much later commercial reproduction, cast in brass rather than bronze, bearing a molded facsimile signature and a decorative edition number that carry no connection to Remington's authorized casting.
