After Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909). "Wooly Chaps" brass, late 20th century. Edition 22 of 100. Signed and numbered on integral base. Cast in brass after Frederic Remington's "Bronco Buster." A cowboy in fringed wooly chaps rides a bronco caught mid-buck, forelegs clawing skyward as its head plunges toward the ground. The rider's arm is outflung, counterbalancing the horse's motion, with saddlebags and stirrups swinging free. The figure rises from an integral naturalistic ground with rocky texture, mounted on a shaped gray marble plinth with an engraved presentation plaque. The base is signed "Frederic Remington" and numbered 22/100, a later edition cast. Size: 17.5" W x 21" H x 11" D (44.5 cm W x 53.3 cm H x 27.9 cm D); on included custom stand: 17.5" W x 23" H x 11" D (44.5 cm W x 58.4 cm H x 27.9 cm D).

Frederic Remington (1861 to 1909) was the preeminent chronicler of the vanishing American frontier, an illustrator, painter, and sculptor whose bronzes defined the visual language of the Old West. "The Bronco Buster," his first sculpture (1895), launched a career in three dimensions that captured cowboys, cavalry, and horses in moments of kinetic drama. Of this subject he wrote: "Only those who have ridden a bronco the first time it was saddled, or have lived through a railroad accident, can form any conception of the solemnity of such experiences. Few Eastern people appreciate the sky-rocket bounds, grunts, and stiff-legged striking..."

This piece is an aftercast, produced long after the artist's death and cast in brass rather than the bronze of Remington's authorized foundry work. Such editions circulate widely as decorative homages and carry no connection to the sculptor's lifetime production.
