Fine Cased Bentley Patent Five-Shot Self-Cocking Percussion Revolver Manufactured circa 1853. This revolver Incorporates British Patent No. 960 of 4 December 1852. The blued octagonal sighted barrel is signed "J. BENTLEY & SON, LIVERPOOL," engraved with a band of foliage at the muzzle and cut with multi-groove rifling. The casehardened cylinder is engraved with a band of foliage at the front edge and numbered from "1" to "5." The border and scroll-engraved white metal/German silver frame is signed "BENTLEYS’ PATENT NO. 296" and has a casehardened foliate-engraved hammer designed for Bentley’s patent safety catch (absent), finely checkered walnut grips, and blued trigger and trigger guard (the latter with border and scroll engraving). There are Birmingham proofmarks. Complete with an original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories, including revolver flask, oil bottle and brass single cavity bullet mould. Joseph Bentley is recorded in Liverpool between 1840 and 1862. This revolver is unusual in not only having a white metal frame but being sold by Bentley himself. The cylinder retains over 90% original casehardened finish, and the hammer retains 98% of its original casehardened finish. The engraving to the frame remains crisp and clear. The fine checkering remains good with some handling and storage blemishes. The case is generally good with some handling and storage marking to the exterior. The baize lining is good with some rubbing from the revolver. The accessories are good.
