Engraved and Gold Inlaid Belgian Colt Patent Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver The frame has "LOUIS MALHERBE" in gold inlay on the left side along with a lightly struck "crown/LM" stamp and "A LIEGE" in gold on the right side. The barrel is marked "COLT/PATENT" on top at the breech. The revolver is marked with a "NM" stamp ahead of the barrel serial number, another "crown/LM" stamp on the bottom of the back strap, "47"on the left side of the front strap, Liege proofs the cylinder as well as "N/GILON," and matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, and trigger guard. The wedge, cylinder pin, cylinder, and back strap are not numbered. Attractive English style scrollwork engraving is found on the barrel, cylinder and frame, and the cylinder has attractive floral engraving. The front sight is a small brass cone, and the rear sight is the standard Colt style notch in the hammer. N. Gilon is known for counterfeit Colt revolvers. Less is known about Malherbe other than that he was registered at the Liege proofhouse from 1842 to 1875 and other members of the family were active throughout the century. The engraving and markings remain mostly crisp. The gold inlays remain complete and legible. The cylinder pins remain solid. The grips are also fine and are slightly undersized and have some slight chips and cracks at the butt and attractive natural tones. Mechanically excellent. Formerly from the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased Bob Ellithorpe in November 1965.
