Ivory Coast, mid 20th century. Decorative figure, well executed with rich details throughout, the figure features a beard divided into three sections, relief-carved scarification nodes on the cheeks, multiple incised brow lines, and metal tacks encircling the forehead. An elaborate coiffure with a long, pendent plait enhances the dignified appearance. The robust torso is carved with hands resting in relief upon the abdomen and is embellished with numerous cicatrice motifs across both the chest and back. The figure stands on flat feet with elongated toes atop an integral squared base bordered with metal tacks. A beaded strand necklace and textile loincloth further enrich the figure. The surface bears a dark brown patina with encrusted deposits, and an inventory number is inscribed on the reverse of the base. Dr. Susan Vogel, expert, curator, and scholar of African art examined this figure and found that it was not authentic, likely carved by a traditional sculptor as a demonstration of artistic skill rather than for ceremonial use. 20.5" H (52.07 cm H).
