[Baseball] Boston Braves 1914 National League Championship Pennant

No place, ca. 1914. Red, blue, and white felt baseball pennant, decorated with a printed image of a "Boston Brave" and the words "National League Championship Braves." Moderately worn and stained; lettering dried and cracked; three small closed tears at outer point affecting lettering and image. 14 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. (368 x 902 mm).

Rare original National League Championship pennant for the 1914 Boston Braves, one of the most memorable seasons by any team in the entire history of baseball.

From 1900-13 Boston's National League team underwent a variety of name changes, including the Beaneaters, the Doves, and the Rustlers, before settling on the Braves. During this span the team had only one winning season, and lost 100 or more games six times.

For most of the 1914 season it was much the same for Boston's National league fans, and by early July the team was in last place, with a record of 26-40--nearly 15 games behind the first place New York Giants. However, their luck began to change, and from July 6 through September 5, they won 41 of their 53 games. Their hot streak continued through September, and they stole the pennant from the reigning National League champion Giants, who had won the pennant in their previous three seasons, to become the only team in history to win the race after being in last place on the Fourth of July. Despite being heavily unfavored in the World Series, the Braves swept Connie Mack's powerhouse Philadelphia Athletics, completing their full season comeback, earning the title "Miracle Braves" in the press.
