Republic of Guinea. Large carving depicting the robust female figure known as Yonbofissa (Tiyambo). Carved in a seated posture upon her haunches, a gesture associated with devotion and reverence, the figure is powerfully modeled with prominent, full breasts and an expressive face featuring large ovoid eyes, relief coiled ears, and long, plaited hair. She is further adorned with a carved necklace, arm cuffs, and bracelets. The figure is supported on an integral base with a handle beneath, allowing it to be carried or danced above the head during performance. The surface retains red and black pigments, with textile attached at the base. The figure of Yonbofissa symbolizes the idealized beauty of the women. the figure was probably associated with one of the female societies that once flourished among the Baga people. A copy of a brief discussion of the acquisition and identity of the figure with Dr. Lamp and Dr. Cobb, accompanies the figure. 28.25" H (71.76 cm H).

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Oliver Cobb, WA; collected 1989 in Sierra Leone by African American couple in situ.
