AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN HUSSAR'S UNIFORM JACKET
A fine example of a pre-World War I ‘dolman'-style uniform jacket, as worn by Austro-Hungarian hussars. The tunic is single-breasted, constructed of blue wool with a standing collar decorated with metallic gold-colored galloon ribbon and knotted embellishments, and is closed at the front with five silver-washed metal toggle buttons. These closures are embellished with intricate passementerie of braided metallic cords with silvered basket-pattern buttons. The cuffs are likewise decorated with galloons and braided cords, the knotted decoration continuing on the back, where it is fitted with two additional decorative toggles. The shoulders each bear a sewn-in strap of braided metallic cord, each secured by a brass shell button. The interior is lined with blue silk, with a brass-buckled strap fitted to each side and an interior slash pocket at the left-hand breast. The interior of the sleeves is fitted with white cotton printed with a pattern of small circles, and the left-hand sleeve liner is date-stamped ‘1909' over ‘HR 14', indicative of ‘Husaren-Regiment Nr. 14' of the Imperial and Royal Hussars of the Austro-Hungarian Army. Other entirely illegible stamps appear within the collar. Measurements: 27 in. from top of collar to bottom rear of tunic, 35 in. waist, sleeves 26 in. from seam at top of sleeve to end of cuff. The front of the uniform is badly sun-faded to gray, with lesser fading to the back and the original color visible beneath the arms and within the front closure. Shows expected wear, soiling and minor fraying to the cuffs and collar, still in very good overall condition with no apparent missing components.
